Rallying Together: Richardson Women Make Their Mark at USTA Nationals

By Cathy Dawson, Team Captain

After a grueling journey through local league play, city championships, and sectional playoffs, our competitive women’s 55+ team achieved the ultimate goal: qualifying for the USTA Nationals. Competing against the best in the country, we finished fifth overall in the nation—an achievement that reflects our dedication to the sport and the Richardson community.

Chemistry in Action: Success in the USTA 55+ 7.0 division relies on doubles communication, trust, and a deep understanding of each other’s playing styles.

The Road to the National Stage

Competitive tennis for women 55+ is a thriving part of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) league system. This system allows athletes to continue competing at a high level in age and skill-based divisions.

Our team competed in the USTA Women’s 55+ 7.0 division, which is one of the most active and competitive brackets in the country. To put our 5th-place finish in perspective:

  • Total Teams Nationwide: 1,525

  • Total Players Nationwide: 20,976

  • The Structure: The USTA is organized into 17 geographic sections; our team was proud to represent the Texas Section on the national stage.

The Canyon Creek Country Club Connection

What makes our run to nationals particularly meaningful is our bond as members of the Canyon Creek Country Club. Unlike public court teams that can recruit players from across the entire North Texas region, private club teams face a unique challenge: every player on the roster must be a member of that specific club.

Advancing through the leagues with a limited roster speaks to the incredible talent and cohesion of our players: Allison Carlson, Leah Collins, Cathy Dawson (Captain), Elizabeth Gonzalez, Chrissi Gumbert, Michele Gurley, Susan Hansen, Sue Hart, Becky Henson, Tami Jost, Jill Kennedy, April Moeser, Joy Pressly, Laurin Shambora (Co-Captain), Dede Vehslage, and Heidi Young.

The Secret to Success: Chemistry and Trust

The 55+ 7.0 division is doubles-only, making communication and chemistry just as vital as a strong serve. Our fifth-place national finish was earned through a year-long process of shared practices and mutual support.

At this stage of life, we prioritize a holistic approach to the game:

  • Strategic Training: A mix of drills, private lessons, and “fun play” sessions.

  • Recovery: Listening to our bodies and prioritizing wellness off the court.

  • Thoughtful Lineups: Pairings are determined based on complementary playing styles and mental toughness under pressure.

Breaking Stereotypes for Active Adults

Our experience at USTA Nationals challenges the stereotypes often associated with women over 55. We proved that competitive drive, athleticism, and ambition do not fade with age. Every opponent we faced had earned her place, resulting in high-intensity matches that challenged us both physically and mentally.
