A Sparkling Night: Celebrating Outstanding Volunteers at the Richardson Real Heroes 2025 Awards

Dr. Mona Alnaeemi and Neil Stampe Honored at 15th Annual Celebration By Bonnie Kudlicki On Thursday, August 28, the Richardson Real Heroes 15th Annual Awards Celebration was a sold-out success at the Eisemann Center for Performing Arts. The event honored two exceptional recipients—Dr. Mona Alnaeemi and Neil Stampe—for their extraordinary commitment to volunteerism. Guests included the Richardson mayor, council members, city manager, and chief of police. The evening festivities, which included a celebration of prior real heroes, featured special guest, Texas-based singer, songwriter, and speaker Sara Hickman. Charles Eisemann presented each honoree with the coveted 2025 Annie Award for their outstanding volunteer work. Further cementing their impact, Congresswoman Julie Johnson bestowed each with a Congressional Commendation for their volunteer achievements. We are incredibly proud to celebrate the work of these two outstanding individuals who exemplify the spirit of community service in Richardson. Real Hero: Mona Alnaeemi, Ph.D. Mona and her family sought refuge from Kurdistan, north of Iraq, during the Saddam Hussein regime. Placed in Richardson upon arrival, they received help from a nonprofit group aiding refugees, which immediately compelled Mona to pay back by dedicating her life to volunteering. For 30 years, the impact of her selfless work has been life-changing for countless people in Richardson and beyond. With a Ph.D. in Human Services, Mona is now a Human Services Board Certified Practitioner and Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor. She leverages her expertise to steer volunteer clients through myriad systems to find food, housing, school, counseling, English language instruction, and critical emotional support in a new city. Her ability to communicate in four languages allows her to connect with and serve a diverse population. Since 2010 at the Islamic Association of North Texas, she established a critical social service line, offering support to single mothers, widows, new refugees, and low-income families, helping them build sustainable, self-sufficient lives. Mona also co-founded the Dallas Institute for Immigrant Women in 2018 and serves actively with the Richardson Police Department and the Richardson Civil Board. Real Hero: Neil Stampe Neil retired at 49, but instead of resting, he committed to giving back. For 30 years and counting, he continues to contribute to the Richardson community in highly impactful ways. His volunteer ‘career’ began in 1995 when he joined the Richardson Rotary Club, holding many positions and aiding in a multitude of successful service projects. He was just sworn in as their 2025 treasurer. A proud graduate of Leadership Richardson’s Class 12 in 1996, Neil has kept that pride alive by acting as an advisor, a ‘rock’ (mentor), and curriculum chair for 11 subsequent classes, remaining an active member of the Alumni Association. In 2003, Neil added the Network of Community Ministries Handyman (part of Seniors’ Net) to his volunteer tool belt, doing no-cost home and safety repairs for seniors and the disabled. He later joined the Network’s Board of Directors, successfully assisting their growth through a $6.3 million fundraising campaign that secured their current headquarters. He was also a co-founder of a similar program, First Richardson Helpers, at First Methodist Richardson Church in 2016. Del’s Returns After Fire, Fueled by 68 Years of Richardson’s Support

[author] [author_image timthumb=’on’]https://richardsonlifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Morgan.jpg[/author_image] [author_info]By Morgan Austin[/author_info] [/author] On the corner of Polk and McKinney lies a historic staple restaurant in the downtown Richardson community, Del’s Charcoal Burgers. On a sweltering afternoon in late May, I visited the owner, Hossein “Hoss” Taherzadeh, who explained how a fire that occurred April 25 deeply affected the Richardson community with Del’s temporary closure. Recovering from a fire is no easy feat for any business. As Hoss showed me around the kitchen, amid the construction and new appliances, he recounted how a long-time regular called him up distraught as soon as he heard about the unfortunate news. Del’s has fed the community for 68 years, with Hoss at the helm for the past 22; as Hoss and I chatted about the future of his restaurant, while his team was hard at work repainting the place and setting up the new grill, I couldn’t help but notice one regular after the other stopping by to give Hoss all their best wishes. Walking into Del’s is like stepping back into the ‘70s. Hanging above the counter is their original menu, with longtime classics like a smoked frank with chili, cheese, and onions. Though the prices have changed over the decades—55 cents for a smoked frank back in 1957—the options themselves have remained remarkably consistent. It’s no wonder that the restaurant’s popularity has only grown over the years, given that the menu boasts a burger for 8 bucks (and, if you’re vegan like I am, they offer a veggie patty burger combo with tots). Hoss recalled when a Dr Pepper CEO once visited Del’s and was enamored by the menu and vintage memorabilia, so much so that the CEO gifted Dr Pepper clocks and signs to hang along the walls. Fortunately, the signs and original menu were saved from the fire and only needed a few retouches. Hoss emigrated to the US from Iran and quickly fell in love with the small-town charm of Richardson. Living just down the road gave Hoss insight into the nature of this tightly knit neighborhood and he got to see firsthand how even a small cornerstone restaurant could bring together such a warm community. That same community stood by his side to support him and Del’s during the closure and he couldn’t wait to be “back as soon as possible for another 68 years.” One man I spoke with who came by to check on Hoss said he’s been consistently coming to Del’s for the past year since he moved from West Virginia. Don Magner, Richardson City Manager and long-time Del’s regular, explained how his boss first introduced him to Del’s, which by then had already cemented itself into the Richardson community for 30 years. States Magner, “Del’s is the place that ties the new and the old together in Richardson. It was there as the city grew and it’ll be there for the community as it develops even further.” Del’s offers a flavor and vibe that can’t be matched by other chains or corporate-owned restaurants and the community knows that. Del’s has been the site for countless college and high school student gatherings. Whether it’s a Richardson High football team celebrating a hard-earned victory or a family looking to kick back with a house-made root beer float after a long week, Del’s provides a friendly atmosphere gushing with tasty authenticity fit for all of Richardson. Thankfully, despite the fire, Del’s Charcoal Burgers is still dishing out its best and still features the same classic menu with some behind-the-scenes upgrades, along with a new soda fountain. If you haven’t already discovered Del’s, now’s the time.

The Interdependence of Mental and Physical Health
The Interdependence of Mental and Physical Health by Deborah Dobbs, MA Emotions continually influence our well-being. Chronic stress compromises our immune system. Highly optimistic people tend to live longer. A 2017 study by Edmondson and von Känel revealed that after a life-threatening or frightening medical event, such as a sudden heart attack or stroke, people have an increased risk of developing such high levels of psychological distress that they increase their risk of another cardiovascular event. So…how do we leverage the mind-body connection to enhance our well-being? Sleep, “the Swiss Army Knife of Health” The connection between mental health and sleep is well-studied and widely known. Stress and sleep disruptions seem to go hand in hand, and, according to John Hopkins Medicine, people with insomnia may be ten times more likely to develop depression than those who get a good night’s sleep. Sleep scientist Dr. Matt Walker describes sleep as our superpower and refers to it as “the Swiss Army Knife of health.” His extensive research reveals the wonderful benefits of sleep and the devastating effects of not getting enough. Sleep has a profound impact on virtually every aspect of our health — from our memory to our reproductive systems. Consider this fact: a man who sleeps only four to five hours a night will have the testosterone level of a man ten years his senior. According to Dr. Walker’s research, sleep regularity could be more important than duration. Therefore, schedules are important. Another sleep expert, Dr. Michael Breus, echoes the importance of maintaining healthy sleep habits and he encourages us to add low impact exercise, like yoga or Tai Chi, to our routine. The Power of Low Impact Exercise In addition to promoting sleep, low-impact exercises such as yoga, Tai Chi, walking, and swimming are excellent boosters of overall health. These activities are gentle on the body, making them ideal for individuals with chronic pain or joint issues. But the benefits go beyond physical. Low impact exercises have been shown to reduce anxiety, promote mindfulness, and improve emotional regulation. When practiced with mindfulness, even simple activities like walking or swimming can become powerful tools for managing stress and improving mental clarity. The combination of movement and mindful attention helps calm the nervous system, reduce cortisol levels (a stress hormone), and promote overall well-being. The Gut-Brain Connection One of the most fascinating areas of research in recent years is how gut health influences mental health. For example, did you know that the gut produces more serotonin (the “feel-good” neurotransmitter) than the brain? This new understanding has led researchers to explore how the gut microbiome—the community of bacteria living in our intestines—affects mood and behavior. Altered gut microbiota has been linked to conditions such as depression, anxiety, autism spectrum disorders, and even Alzheimer’s disease. Research also suggests that probiotics—healthy bacteria supplements—may help improve mental health, possibly enhancing the effectiveness of antidepressant treatments. The gut-brain connection is a relatively new field of study, but it nonetheless encourages us to take care of our gut health. Staying hydrated, avoiding sugar, and consuming probiotics are simple ways to maintain a healthy gut and a happy brain. Maximizing the Mind-Body Connection By embracing the interconnectedness of our physical and mental health, we can take proactive steps to enhance our well-being. Whether through emotional healing, improving our gut health, getting quality sleep, or incorporating low-impact exercises, there are countless ways to harness the power of the mind-body connection for a healthier, more balanced life. Deborah Dobbs, MA serves as Executive Director of The Counseling Place and has been part of the Richardson community since 1973. A published author of psychological thrillers (available on Amazon or directly from Anatolian Press LLC), she also has several screenplays in the works. Deborah loves scuba diving, fly-fishing with her husband, drinking Irish whiskey and smoking the occasional cigar. And if she loves you, she’ll cook for you. Resources: Birk, Jeffrey. The Richardson Family YMCA A Hub for Health, Connection and Purpose By Samantha Buehler and Jennifer Federici Since its establishment in 1961, the Richardson Family YMCA has been more than just a fitness center; it’s been a cornerstone of health, wellness and community spirit. Nestled near the intersection of Custer and Arapaho Roads, the Y has grown into a multi-generational gathering place where fitness meets fellowship and wellness intertwines with purpose. When many locals think of the Richardson Family YMCA, they immediately picture the nearly 10,000 children who find joy and growth through its soccer leagues, swim lessons, summer camps and Adventure Guides. For countless Richardson families, the Y has been a foundational experience, with parents and grandparents bringing their own children back to share the same treasured memories they once created. Building Wellness and Community What truly sets the Richardson Family YMCA apart from other fitness centers is its sense of purpose and belonging. It’s not just a place to exercise; it’s a place where relationships are built, memories are made, and lives are transformed. The Y offers more than 35 group exercise classes weekly, covering a wide array of interests and fitness levels. From yoga and spin to high-energy Les Mills classes, these sessions not only keep members fit but foster camaraderie that extends far beyond the gym. In fact, the sense of community cultivated in these classes has inspired members to host potlucks, support their instructors’ theater performances, and even pursue fitness careers themselves. Longtime members and instructors are a testament to the Richardson Y’s unique charm. Take Aleda Keel, who has been leading popular classes for more than two decades, or Michele and Jim Stamm, who have been a part of the Y staff team for a combined 60 years and have had both their kids and grandkids go through YMCA programming. Seniors have even created their own quarterly lunch-and-learn events, proving that wellness at the Y is as much about social connection as it is about physical fitness. YMCA Member Teri Riha began her journey with the Richardson Family YMCA more than 10 years ago. While rehabilitation after a knee injury brought her to the Y, it was the people she met in group exercise classes that have kept her engaged. Realizing the increased benefit of exercise and a sense of community as she ages, Teri continues to enjoy Pilates, barre, the senior classes taught by Carol O’Farrell, and making new friends. When asked what one word or phrase comes to mind when she thinks of the YMCA, she replies, “Community.” Another local couple who loves the Richardson Y are Brent and Jamie Buemi, who have been coming here for many years, as have their growing family. They can get a workout in while their children enjoy the Child Watch area. Jaime says, “We love the YMCA so much! It has become Community and fellowship with neighbors, a sweet time for our kids, and has great equipment for workouts. We are grateful to be members!” Brent also added, “What makes the Richardson Y unique is its hospitable and welcoming environment and its friendly staff which keeps us coming back.” A Community Partner The Richardson Y thrives on its deep ties to the community. An 18-person volunteer board of local business and community leaders drives fundraising, community events, and other initiatives that ensure the Y remains a vital resource for Richardson residents. Board member Ryan Kamp has always sought out YMCAs in his communities and the Kamps have been members for several years, visiting the Y regularly and enrolling their kids in the Y’s youth programming alongside so many other Richardson residents. “The YMCA is more than a gym. Unlike other facilities, the Y is focused on the community: making a real impact, promoting a healthy lifestyle, and inspiring action. I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of the YMCA Richardson board for the past several years. Our goal is the spread the Y message, tell our Y stories, and do what we can to make our branch the best it can be,” states Ryan. A Vision for the Future The Y’s local board continues to look for new and various ways to serve and support the Richardson community. As the Richardson Family YMCA continues to grow and evolve, its mission remains steadfast: to foster health, wellness, and community for all. Through its unique blend of programs, outreach and partnerships, the Richardson Family YMCA exemplifies what it means to be a true beacon of health and community – a purpose, not just a place. To learn more about the unique programs at the Richardson Y, visit http://richardsonymca.org. Making an Impact Beyond the Gym As a nonprofit organization, the Richardson Family YMCA is dedicated to serving the broader Richardson community. Its outreach efforts touch lives in meaningful ways, ensuring that financial need is never a barrier to participation. Every year, the Y raises funds that go directly back into the local community, supporting children and families who might not otherwise have access to its programs. In 2025, the Richardson Family YMCA aims to raise $143,000 to continue providing scholarships for memberships and programs such as swim lessons and youth sports. These funds also support vital initiatives such as: Go For Green A drowning prevention program offering free swim lessons to non-swimming camp participants. HEROES Partnership Providing free gym and pool access to this local nonprofit during the year. Summer Learning Academy Helping RISD students combat summer learning loss through a targeted educational program that innovatively integrates academics with the fun of summer camp. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA A new program launching this year to assist cancer survivors with physical rehabilitation and social support as they journey through recovery. Thanks to these efforts, no one is turned away from the Y due to financial need—a principle that underscores the organization’s commitment to inclusivity and community building.

At just 33 years old, Maricsa has already garnered multiple accolades. In 2022, she received her first nomination for the prestigious James Beard Award and was a Semifinalist for Outstanding Baker. In 2023, she was nominated again and became a finalist for the James Beard Award for Outstanding Bakery and La Casita was recognized as one of the five best bakeries in the country. Maricsa appeared on Food Network’s 2022 season of “Halloween Baking Championship.” D Magazine has recognized her on more than one occasion for her outstanding baking skills. She’s a big deal in the baking world. But sitting down to chat with Maricsa is more like catching up with a long-lost friend who walks out of her kitchen with a welcoming and infectious smile. BUILDING A DREAM Maricsa began working toward her dream of building a bakery of her own in a tiny Oak Cliff brew pub. While Alex worked the front of the house, Maricsa traded handmade burger buns for the space to bake pastries, which she sold at a few coffee shops around Dallas. Over time, her reputation grew and they were flooded with orders for Maricsa’s delicious pastries. The duo dreamed of opening their own brickand-mortar shop. Maricsa and Alex discovered Richardson thanks to a wholesale partner who had a small kitchen in the same shopping center where La Casita Bakeshop is now located. Having already establishing a name for themselves thanks to wildly successful pop-ups at places like Parks Coffee in Carrollton and other coffee shops plus a large Instagram following, the duo needed a place to establish roots and bake. They started out as a small “take out only” bakery and sold out on opening day within 45 minutes. People waited in a line that wrapped around the building for La Casita’s legendary cruffins and croissants, along with cakes and breads. D Magazine soon labeled them as the best takeaway bakery. Maricsa’s dream had become an exciting reality. LEARNING TO PIVOT But five weeks after opening, COVID hit. Maricsa and Alex took a couple of weeks off to reset and plan next steps. Determined to stay afloat but do so with integrity, the couple decided to pay their bakers as long as they could even though the bakers weren’t working. Says Maricsa, “They had families to feed and were depending on us.” Thankfully, La Casita already had an online ordering system in place, so they pivoted to pre-orders only and delivered the baked goods curbside. Most days the couple had orders for hundreds of items to be picked up within a six-hour window. With only two people working the front of the shop and Maricsa and Alex baking nonstop, the shop survived and earned a fiercely loyal customer base. ONE BIG FAMILYIt’s now La Casita’s fifth year in Richardson. The couple added a third partner, Brianna Short, to handle the operations-related side of the business and their 80 crew members are treated like family. Some sous chefs start at La Casita at 17 or 18 years old. Maricsa and Alex clearly love their employees and make a substantial financial commitment to them. La Casita’s payroll is high, but they want employees “to stay for the long haul,” says Maricsa. La Casita has 11 full-time bakers and are looking to grow that number. Not only are team members encouraged to opt in to La Casita’s healthcare plan, a rarity in the small business world, but Alex – known as the “mom” at La Casita – invests time and energy into making sure that employees are taking care of their mental, physical and financial health. He checks in on them regularly and offers guidance and support when asked. This sense of family extends to having FUN together! A highlight is the annual company-wide Field Day Maricsa and Alex host at Martha Point Park in Carrollton. Says Maricsa, “Field Day is HUGE! We shut all of our stores down on a Monday for Field Day. We play games and have gift cards for winners. It’s so much fun!” TAKING TIME TO REFLECT When asked what it’s like to own a business in Richardson, Maricsa compares the city to the small mountain town of San Jose Iturbide, Mexico, where her parents grew up. “Richardson is like a big family and we’ve become the family’s bakery. People who live here support us and we’ve felt a sense of ‘community’ here,” says Maricsa. Crediting her success to her “ancestors’ work ethic,” Maricsa smiles widely when sharing stories of her family. And she laughs at having “taken a few years off her life” from the fast pace of owning a successful business. But it’s clear that she and Alex don’t mind hard work. She also feels that their success rests on finding people who helped the couple along the way and fit various needs of the burgeoning business. States Maricsa, “You can have a great idea, but you have to have great people around you to make it happen.” PLANS FOR THE FUTURE Their booming wholesale business, retail restaurant and take out bakery are all run out of their 6,000 sq ft. Richardson location. They also own La Casita Coffee on Rowlett’s Main Street and have two exciting projects in the works. The next La Casita Coffee, opening by the end of 2024, will be located inside Half Price Books’ flagship store on Northwest Highway in Dallas. They’ll start with coffee and pastries and eventually offer brunch at that location. The shop will also have an outdoor patio space. A second

Shady’s Burgers & Brewhaha Celebrates Ten Years
The award-winning Shady’s Burgers & Brewhaha, a family-friendly neighborhood restaurant and bar, will celebrate ten years on April 1. The Best Burger in Dallas winner, according to the Dallas Observer’s Best of 2022, opened in 2013 in the Canyon Creek neighborhood of Richardson, Texas. Then, in 2015, a second Shady’s location opened in Richardson’s Lake Highlands. Both casual dining restaurants are still neighborhood favorites and Dallas destinations for many burger lovers. Five neighborhood friends became business partners when they decided one evening to come together to give families, friends and neighbors a unique place to gather while serving scratch kitchen favorites, local beers and the best margaritas in town. “We set out 10 years ago to build a neighborhood place with a great patio that served a variety of fresh dishes and cold beverages. We are excited to reach this milestone and look forward to another ten,” said Shady’s partner Don Bouvier. Shady’s will kick of the anniversary weekend Friday, March 31 at 3:00 pm with a continuous Happy Hour that will run through Sunday evening. In addition, Shady’s will debut their new light lager, Slim Shady’s, created by the Oak Highlands Brewery specifically for Shady’s in honor of the ten-year anniversary. “We are excited to introduce this new, flavorful, namesake beer to our customers and friends,” said Bouvier. “We know our guests are going to love it as much as we do.” Both Shady’s locations will celebrate all weekend long with giveaways, drawings, new merchandise, music and more. “We invite all our customers and friends to come out and celebrate with us by raising a glass to ten years,” said partner Greg Cooney. “The five partners have a lot to be thankful for, including our supportive families, stakeholders and the entire Shady’s team! We love to serve and we love our guests. They’ve become our Shady friends.” CCBC Enterprises is the parent company of Shady’s Burgers & Brewhaha and The Fifth Fireside Patio & Bar. The three restaurants are casual dining restaurants and bars with a focus on becoming neighborhood destinations that serve scratch food, local beers and cocktails.
